URBAN GARDENING

I’ve been fascinated by this practice for quit some time now. Years ago first confronted with a compost bucket and seed nursery in a kitchen of my CouchSurfing host in Brussels. Before that day it didn’t cross my mind that indoor gardening was possible. But this theme stuck with me and made me notice all the strange urban gardening going on wherever I went. I’m so glad that this topic is spreading through our society and new efficient ways of gardening in small & public spaces are thought, shared and perfected. And there’s a lot of recycling going on to create amazing low budget urban gardens like this one.

NEO NUDISM

In the beginning of June I was assisting a friend Jasper Griepink with his exposition in Oslo, Norway. Part of the project was a visit into the woods outside the city where we spend a day on a nudist beach. That day changed our lives! Never before have I felt so free. Nudism is a great way to get rid of prejudice you have about your body thanks to media culture. This topic really shook our minds because being nude in public places is actually illegal! Why something so natural is treated as marginal? I love it how this picture plays with this question. The body suits save the nudist aesthetics while staying socially acceptable. But the meaning of the image balances on the edge of a blade.

ENERGY IN A SPOON

A while ago I discovered the lovely Kimberly Snyder and was thinking to buy her book “The Beauty Detox Solution”. She’s a celebrity nutriciounist from the USA and has some clever idea’s on how to eat your way to a healthier, more beautiful you. Sounds like you’ve heard that one before, but this girl is up to date!

TIMELESS D.I.Y.

Lovely things made by the lovely Sophie Holterman whom I know from school. Back at the HKU she did a lot of modeling for my whole class. Specially during the final year as we were working on our first collections.

Back then I had no idea that she wanted to be a fashion designer. But I deeply understand her desicion because her designs just scream: good taste and quality! I want to order the bow scarf for next winter. Too bad it’s almost spring.

POLAROID UPCYCLING

I was trying to find out if there’s any alternative film for the Polaroid 80 land camera. Turned out there’s another type of land camera with te same number, referred to as the highlander. It’s this type of antique looking foldable STEAMPUNK jewel.

This type of polaroid camera works with a roll film. However the original films have been discontinued, you can convert the camera to use 120 roll film! I found this cool conversion tutorial using LEGOS’s. Looks good to me!

Today I stumbled upon this USA government funded initiative called Choose MyPlate and noticed their Fruits & Veggies Video Challenge contest. It’s lovely that they’re motivating people to eat more healthy in such a fun and interactive way! I’m showcasing a great idea for students and people with a busy schedule who basically live on the go. Making your snacks like this kid would really boost your productivity, health and you’d save a lot of money!

I’m a big fan of the Photogram technique, first exploited by Surrealist artist Man Ray back in the day. Though in this example you can see bits of our modern culture coming through: stencilry!

Russians have the best ideas! This cool get together is a photography swap in Moskou organised by Akademija Fotografii. Where hundreds of photographs are hang to dry. It occupies two street blocks! With a concert, tea for visitors and lots of mingeling. LOVE!!!

Even though I’m not a fan of the way big companies (ab)use the d.i.y. movement for their own promotion, I have to admit that it’s cool to motivate more people to come out worldwide with their own idea’s. And open some more eyes to what’s going on and is possible on YouTube…

Today I received a found footage indie film in my YouTube mailbox and I have to say that I love this Once a Week Festival initiative and their YouTube channel!

By chance I bumped into this really cool recycling idea! Turns out that electronics have goldplated and golden parts inside that can be extracted. It’s the modern goldmining!

Some years ago I bumped into jewellery made from mother boards that a crafter sold through livejournal. There’s something precious about those tiny green landscapes inside electronics, but the fact that there’s goldplate on them makes it of real value!

- It’s been a year and a half since I came up with genus.neotoma. Though I didn’t commit to it, the project has been on my mind all the time. Maybe it’s a sign of quality that it took me so long to get myself together for this project? Although it’s a shame I haven’t been blogging my progress. So that the progress isn’t visible… There is a lot to catch up on, a lot to show and tell. So I hope my commitment to genus.neotoma will be stronger in 2012.
